Lavender Blue

Plays slow and soft, and loud and fast, indie and americana music.

Planted and watered in Asheville, NC since 2017, Lavender Blue carries the songs and musings of Kayla Zuskin.

Over time it has blossomed into a full band outfit with Mike Johnson on Pedal Steel, Maddie Kendrick on Bass and Jack Victor on drums. Their most recent LP “The In Between” was released on cassette by Ghost Mountain Records in March of 2025.

They have opened for bands such as Improvement Movement, Mei Siemones, Wednesday, Johanna Warren and Indigo de Souza and played All Go West, AVL Fest, and Golden Folk.
Most recently they were awarded an Artist Support Grant from the Asheville Area Arts Council, and are in the process of recording an acoustic driven EP, set for release in Fall 2026.

“ "Wishbone." This song offers an indie rock experience where distortion takes center stage within the narrative. The vocal performance develops an interesting reflection on the intimate dissonance that arises from distancing oneself from people and places, as well as the intrinsic connection of these relationships. All of this is presented in a mesmerizing, strong, and raw atmosphere, providing distinct layers in both the sound and the vocal performance, the emotions that arise, and the individual interpretation of each listener. This makes "Wishbone" a highly active, profound, and engaging track.”-R+

“… ‘Scarlet Blood’ opens with a far more restrained, acoustic style, it sacrifices none of the emotional intensity. For while the initial mood is one of numbness and stasis, but the sensation is not lasting. Instead Kayla Zuskin and co. push through to something more keenly felt, and the track settles into a kind of ebb and flow between subdued quiet and rising intensity, accepting such patterns as the natural state of things. As the repeated refrain goes: “What goes around comes back again.”

“With a lovely use of pedal steel guitar, reverb, and a dreamy vocal performance, the effect is something that captures a wistful sense of melancholic and looming loss, perfect for the chilly and lonely days of winter, let alone in the current stage of this never-ending pandemic, where we have all been forced to indeed, slow down.”- We All Want Someone to Shout For

Underlying themes of folk and soft-rock brings House on a Highway by Lavender Blue. The song lies out gentleness in the most reposeful way— still breeze, total reminiscence. This is what it feels like to fall in love, finding home in someone and within yourself.-Start Tracks

Zuskin’s plaintive vocals firmly placed underneath sand waves of slightly off-kilter guitar chords, and instrumental crescendos being teased but not acted upon every once in a while. By the end of the song, though, she’s done with teasing – instead, she lets an unexpected guitar solo rip out. It’s not bombast for the sake of it but a way to finish the song in a determined and tenacious way.- High Clouds.org

““Beware” embodies the unique style of Lavender Blue, summoning both dark and light to create its own atmosphere.”-American Pancake

“Grace and subtlety are the hallmarks of this understated collection of songs.”-Mountain Xpress
